Mumbai Metro 3 is set to gain dedicated mobile connectivity infrastructure under a 25-year agreement between ACES India and Reliance Jio, bringing 4G and 5G services to stations and tunnels along the fully underground corridor. The development addresses a practical gap in Mumbai’s newest major transport system, where reliable digital access is increasingly part of how passengers navigate, communicate and use public services. The agreement covers the mobile infrastructure deployed across the 33.5-kilometre Aqua Line, which runs between Aarey and Cuffe Parade through 27 stations. Reliance Jio will provide services using the infrastructure installed by ACES India, extending coverage into areas where conventional outdoor mobile signals are unable to penetrate effectively.

For commuters, the significance goes beyond making phone calls underground. Mobile access supports digital ticketing, journey planning, emergency communication, online payments and access to real-time travel information. Reliable connectivity can also become important during service disruptions, when passengers need timely information while inside stations or tunnels. The Mumbai Metro 3 connectivity rollout comes after earlier difficulties in establishing mobile coverage on the underground corridor. Legal proceedings in 2026 have highlighted the commercial and contractual complexities surrounding telecom infrastructure within the metro system, including licensing arrangements and the installation of shared cellular facilities. That history makes the long-term agreement significant from an infrastructure-management perspective. Underground telecommunications systems require specialised equipment, power, maintenance and coordination with railway operations. A shared infrastructure model can potentially reduce the need for operators to duplicate equipment throughout stations and tunnels, while allowing capacity to expand as data consumption grows.

The scale of Metro 3 makes this particularly relevant. The corridor links employment districts, airports, residential neighbourhoods and major transport interchanges, including parts of BKC, the airport area and South Mumbai. Government information estimates the completed line can serve around 13 lakh passengers daily. Urban mobility specialists say digital infrastructure should increasingly be considered alongside physical transport infrastructure. Connectivity can make public transport more accessible, particularly when integrated with journey-planning platforms, digital payments and multimodal travel information. But reliability and affordability remain important: a connected network is useful only when passengers can consistently access essential services. The environmental case is also indirect but relevant. Better digital information can help passengers make informed connections between metro, rail, bus and other modes, supporting more efficient public transport use. However, the growing telecom footprint also creates requirements for energy-efficient equipment and responsible maintenance.

The Mumbai Metro 3 connectivity agreement therefore represents more than a telecom contract. It adds another layer to the city’s transport infrastructure, with the next test being whether digital reliability can translate into a smoother, safer and more integrated passenger experience over the corridor’s long operating life.
