Mumbai’s relationship with the Arabian Sea has long defined its identity, economy and expansion. Yet growing evidence suggests that the city’s marine ecosystem is under increasing stress from untreated sewage, plastic leakage and unchecked urban waste, raising questions about the long-term sustainability of India’s financial capital and the resilience of its coastal communities. As a low-lying coastal metropolis, Mumbai depends on healthy marine ecosystems for much more than recreation and scenic value. The sea supports fishing livelihoods, moderates local temperatures, sustains biodiversity and acts as a buffer against climate-related risks. Urban planners increasingly argue that protecting these natural systems is now central to safeguarding the city’s economic future and public health.

Official environmental assessments have repeatedly highlighted the pressure exerted by rapid urbanisation on Mumbai’s coastline. The city’s ageing sewerage infrastructure struggles to keep pace with population growth, resulting in significant quantities of wastewater entering creeks and coastal waters before receiving adequate treatment. During the monsoon, stormwater drains frequently transport plastic debris and solid waste into the Arabian Sea, intensifying marine pollution. Environmental researchers warn that the consequences extend beyond ecological degradation. Elevated levels of pollutants reduce dissolved oxygen in water bodies, affecting fish populations and disrupting marine food chains that support traditional fishing communities. The emergence of microplastics in marine environments has further intensified concerns, with studies globally indicating their presence within seafood consumed by humans. Mumbai’s mangrove ecosystems, often described by scientists as critical natural infrastructure, face mounting pressure from waste accumulation and habitat disturbance. These coastal forests help absorb wave energy, reduce flood impacts and capture carbon.

Their deterioration could weaken the city’s ability to withstand increasingly frequent extreme weather events linked to climate change. The issue also carries economic implications. Coastal degradation threatens sectors dependent on marine resources while increasing the financial burden associated with flood management, public health interventions and environmental restoration. As temperatures in the Arabian Sea continue to rise, experts note that stronger cyclonic activity and changing rainfall patterns could compound existing vulnerabilities. Addressing coastal pollution therefore requires a coordinated urban response rather than isolated clean-up drives. Investment in sewage treatment capacity, stricter enforcement against illegal dumping, expanded waste segregation and stronger public participation are increasingly viewed as essential components of climate-resilient city planning.

For Mumbai, the challenge is not simply environmental stewardship. The city’s continued prosperity, liveability and disaster preparedness may depend on recognising that coastal pollution is fundamentally an urban governance issue. Ensuring the health of the sea that shaped Mumbai’s rise could ultimately determine how successfully the metropolis navigates its future in an era of accelerating climate uncertainty.
