Mumbai Jogeshwari Terminus Expands Rail Connectivity

Mumbai is set to strengthen its long-distance rail network with the first phase of the Jogeshwari Terminus nearing operational readiness, marking a significant addition to the Western Railway corridor. The new facility is expected to improve regional connectivity, ease congestion at existing railway terminals and support more integrated urban mobility as the city’s transport demand continues to grow. The first phase of the Jogeshwari Terminus is expected to become operational this month, with two passenger platforms ready to accommodate long-distance train services. The project, located in Jogeshwari East, has experienced multiple implementation delays due to administrative processes, land-related challenges and changes in construction contracts, extending the original delivery schedule.

Transport planners view the new terminus as an important infrastructure intervention aimed at redistributing passenger traffic across Mumbai’s rail network. Existing terminals, including Mumbai Central, Dadar, Bandra Terminus, Andheri and Borivali, regularly experience high passenger volumes, particularly during peak travel seasons. The addition of another departure and arrival point is expected to reduce operational pressure while improving service flexibility for railway authorities. The Jogeshwari Terminus has been strategically positioned to strengthen multimodal connectivity. Located close to the Jogeshwari suburban railway station, the facility will also benefit from road access through the Jogeshwari–Vikhroli Link Road and connections to Mumbai’s expanding Metro network. Urban mobility experts note that integrating long-distance rail with Metro and road transport can shorten travel times, improve accessibility and reduce dependence on private vehicles for first- and last-mile journeys. The initial phase will comprise two operational platforms designed to accommodate up to three long-distance trains simultaneously. One platform has been constructed adjacent to the existing station infrastructure, while another has been positioned between railway tracks to maximise operational efficiency within the available corridor.

Railway officials are also progressing with the project’s second phase, which will introduce additional platforms, train stabling facilities and supporting operational infrastructure. Once completed, the expanded terminus is expected to improve train movement, reduce scheduling constraints and strengthen capacity on the Western Railway network. Urban infrastructure specialists believe the project reflects a broader shift towards decentralising railway operations across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. Rather than concentrating long-distance services at a limited number of major terminals, additional hubs can distribute passenger demand more evenly while supporting urban growth in emerging residential and commercial districts. Beyond passenger convenience, the new terminus is expected to generate wider economic benefits by improving regional accessibility and supporting transit-oriented development around the surrounding precinct. Better transport connectivity often encourages commercial activity, enhances property accessibility and strengthens integration between housing, employment centres and public transport networks.

While the first phase marks a significant milestone, transport experts emphasise that the long-term success of the project will depend on timely completion of the remaining infrastructure, efficient operational planning and seamless coordination with Metro, suburban rail and road transport services. As Mumbai continues expanding its transport ecosystem, the new terminus is expected to play an increasingly important role in creating a more resilient, accessible and interconnected rail network for the metropolitan region.
