Mumbai Jogeshwari Junction Strengthens Public Transport Network
Mumbai Jogeshwari Junction is set to play a larger role in the city’s transport network, with long-distance train services expected to begin from January 2027 as part of a broader station redevelopment programme. The project aims to transform the suburban station into a multi-modal transport hub, improving regional connectivity while integrating rail, Metro and other public transport systems to support the Mumbai Metropolitan Region’s growing mobility needs. The proposed redevelopment forms part of ongoing efforts to strengthen railway infrastructure in Mumbai’s western suburbs, where increasing passenger demand has intensified pressure on existing transport corridors. Railway officials indicated during a recent project review that the upgraded station is being planned as an interchange capable of connecting multiple modes of transport while improving commuter convenience through enhanced passenger facilities.
Under the redevelopment plan, Mumbai Jogeshwari Junction will accommodate outstation train operations in addition to its suburban services, reducing dependence on existing long-distance railway terminals. Urban mobility experts believe distributing intercity services across multiple stations could ease congestion at Mumbai’s busiest railway hubs while improving accessibility for passengers living in the western suburbs. The station redevelopment also includes provisions for integrated parking facilities, pedestrian movement improvements and seamless connectivity with Metro services. Officials stated that a second phase may include commercial developments such as a hotel and retail space, although these components remain subject to technical assessments and financial viability studies. Urban planners caution that commercial development should complement, rather than compromise, public transport efficiency and commuter accessibility.
The review meeting also assessed progress on several railway capacity enhancement projects across the Mumbai North West parliamentary constituency. Construction of the 7.08-kilometre Goregaon-Borivali Harbour Line extension is progressing towards its targeted completion in March 2029. Once operational, the new corridor is expected to strengthen suburban rail capacity by providing additional east-west connectivity across the metropolitan region. Passenger amenity improvements are also underway at Andheri and Jogeshwari stations. Additional lifts and escalators are being installed to improve accessibility and reduce crowding, while platform extension works are enabling the introduction of longer 15-coach suburban trains on additional sections of the Western Railway network. Transport specialists note that such upgrades are essential as Mumbai’s suburban railway continues to carry millions of passengers daily. From a wider urban planning perspective, integrated transport hubs are increasingly viewed as key elements of sustainable city development. By combining rail, Metro, buses, pedestrian infrastructure and last-mile connectivity within a single interchange, cities can encourage greater public transport use, reduce private vehicle dependence and lower transport-related emissions. However, experts emphasise that these benefits depend on careful design, universal accessibility and efficient interchange planning.
If delivered as scheduled, Mumbai Jogeshwari Junction could emerge as an important transport gateway serving both suburban commuters and intercity travellers. The project’s long-term success will ultimately depend on how effectively it integrates with the wider metropolitan transport network while maintaining a people-first approach that prioritises accessibility, operational efficiency and sustainable urban mobility.
