Mumbai is set to significantly enhance its water supply infrastructure with the construction of a 9.7 km-long underwater tunnel, spearheaded by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). This project, part of a broader 100 km network of underground water tunnels, aims to bolster water supply to key areas including Ghatkopar, Parel, and Wadala.
Initiated in October 2021, the tunnel project was designed to address persistent issues of water contamination and man-made leakages while improving water supply efficiency. The first breakthrough for the tunnel, linking Ghatkopar and Wadala, was achieved in September 2022. The subsequent phase saw completion in June of this year, marking significant progress towards the project’s goals.
The total cost of the project is pegged at Rs 940 crore, with the anticipated full operational status expected by 2026. Once completed, Mumbai will boast a comprehensive 100 km underground water tunnel network, placing it as a significant contender in global rankings, though New York currently leads with a 111 km network. Mumbai’s first water supply tunnel was inaugurated in 1955, setting a foundation for future expansions.
According to detailed reports, these tunnels are positioned at a depth of approximately 100 meters below ground, a substantial improvement over traditional pipelines that are typically laid 3 to 5 meters underground. The larger diameters, ranging from 2 to 5 meters, and the deeper placement allow these tunnels to handle greater water volumes under higher pressures, enhancing overall supply capacity and reliability.
The increased depth of the tunnels also provides added protection against potential damage from surface-level roadworks and other civil engineering activities, ensuring the longevity and uninterrupted functionality of Mumbai’s water infrastructure. The development of this underground network reflects Mumbai’s commitment to upgrading its infrastructure to meet growing urban demands and improve water management. As the city progresses towards the completion of this vital project, the enhanced water supply system is expected to play a crucial role in supporting Mumbai’s future growth and sustainability.
