Mumbai’s domestic gas distribution network is set to adopt a new field-based digital service model as gas meter reading operations move closer to consumers’ doorsteps through a collaboration between Mahanagar Gas Limited (MGL) and the Department of Posts. Beginning with a pilot programme in South Mumbai, the initiative seeks to improve billing accuracy, strengthen service transparency and modernise utility management using an established last-mile public service network. The pilot marks a significant shift in how utility companies manage customer data collection, particularly in densely populated urban environments where access to residential premises and timely meter recording can present operational challenges. If successful, the programme is expected to be expanded across Mumbai in phases, covering a larger base of domestic piped natural gas consumers.
Under the new arrangement, trained postal personnel will visit registered households to capture gas meter reading data through a dedicated mobile application. Each reading will be accompanied by a photograph of the meter display before being securely transmitted to the utility’s digital platform through an integrated application programming interface (API). The digital workflow is intended to minimise manual errors while creating a transparent and traceable record of every meter inspection. Urban utility experts view such digital integration as part of a broader transformation taking place across essential public services. Accurate meter data is fundamental to fair consumer billing, operational efficiency and effective demand forecasting. Automated digital records also reduce disputes related to estimated consumption while supporting more responsive customer service. Officials associated with the initiative indicate that household visits will be carried out only for authorised consumer addresses, with personnel using official identification and designated digital systems. The programme also aims to improve customer confidence by deploying trained staff and encouraging greater participation of women personnel wherever operationally feasible for residential visits. Energy analysts note that digital field verification can play an increasingly important role as cities expand piped natural gas infrastructure.
