Mumbai Footpath Safety Tested After Dadar Roadwork

Mumbai’s latest road upgrade in Dadar East has exposed a familiar gap between carriageway improvements and pedestrian infrastructure. Residents have raised concerns about construction debris and damaged paver blocks along Swami Gyan Jivandas Marg, where pre-monsoon concreting has altered the level of the road and left parts of the adjoining footpath difficult to use. The Dadar East footpath runs along a key local route connecting Dadar railway station with Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Road. That makes the condition of the walking corridor particularly relevant for commuters who move between the station, nearby shops and residential buildings.

The road was concreted before the monsoon, subsequently leaving the carriageway around two to three inches above the adjoining footpath. Asphalt ramps were installed at some locations to allow vehicles to enter building and commercial premises. While those ramps improve vehicle access, residents’ concerns point to a competing requirement: preserving enough clear, continuous space for people walking. Broken paver blocks and leftover material can reduce the effective width of a pavement even where its basic structure remains intact. For older people, wheelchair users, people carrying luggage and parents travelling with children, relatively small obstructions can turn a short walk into a road-level movement. Urban infrastructure specialists say road works should be assessed as complete only when pedestrian edges, drainage and property access have been properly finished. This is particularly important in Mumbai, where intense rainfall can quickly expose differences in road levels, damaged surfaces and inadequate drainage.

The Dadar East footpath issue also illustrates a wider maintenance challenge. Mumbai’s street network is increasingly being upgraded through concrete roads and other capital works, but the benefits can be diluted when adjoining pavements are not restored to the same standard. A smoother carriageway does little for public mobility if pedestrians are forced around debris or into vehicle space. There is also an economic dimension. Dadar’s streets support a dense mix of homes, shops and transport activity. Clear pedestrian routes help customers reach businesses, reduce conflicts between vehicles and people and make public transport connections more efficient. Poorly maintained footpaths, by contrast, can push walking activity towards carriageways and increase exposure to traffic. The immediate priority is therefore straightforward: remove construction waste, replace damaged pavers and ensure that ramps do not compromise the usable pedestrian corridor. Any corrective work should also consider surface gradients and drainage before further heavy rainfall.

For Mumbai, the episode offers a practical measure of how well public works are being delivered on the ground. Road construction and pedestrian improvements need to be treated as one street-level system, with accessibility and safety considered alongside vehicle movement. The quality of that final stretch of pavement often determines whether a major civic upgrade actually improves daily urban life.
