Mumbai Police have deployed around 500 personnel at Azad Maidan ahead of the Cockroach Janta Party’s Tiranga rally and other demonstrations expected to draw a large evening crowd, while traffic movement in South Mumbai remains normal, according to a police official quoted by The Indian Express.
Multiple groups are scheduled to gather at the designated protest venue. The demonstrations include a demand for the removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, a CJP protest seeking justice over the detention of Saurav Das and Aushtosh Ranka, and a demonstration connected to the death of Sahil Wakode, an IIT student who died by suicide after allegedly being caught using a mobile phone during an examination.
The police deployment is intended to maintain law and order, manage the expected increase in attendance and ensure that public movement around the maidan is not disrupted. The CJP has permission to hold its protest at Azad Maidan, the report said.
“As of now, no special route diversions have been made as the protest will take place inside the designated space in the maidan,” police officials said. They added that traffic movement had not been affected so far because the demonstrations were scheduled to remain within the boundaries of Azad Maidan.
The arrangement places the main responsibility for crowd management inside the protest site, while keeping surrounding roads open to motorists. For South Mumbai, where Azad Maidan sits close to major administrative, commercial and transport activity, the distinction between an event contained within the ground and one spilling into adjoining roads is central to traffic planning.
Police said their immediate focus was to maintain security and allow the permitted protests to proceed peacefully. No traffic diversions had been announced at the time of the report, and authorities had not indicated any change to normal movement on surrounding routes.
