Mumbai Coastal Road to Operate 24 Hours from Mid-June

Mumbai’s ambitious Coastal Road project is poised to achieve a significant milestone by mid-June 2025, with plans to open the 7.5 km stretch between Priyadarshini Park and the Worli end of the Bandra-Worli Sea Link to 24-hour access.

Currently, the road operates from 7 am to midnight due to ongoing construction activities. The extension to 24×7 access is contingent upon the completion of the adjacent promenade, which is nearing its final stages. The promenade, designed to be a continuous 7.5 km walkway, will feature dedicated cycle tracks, jogging paths, and 20-meter-wide pedestrian zones. It aims to provide a recreational space for walkers, joggers, and cyclists, with underpasses facilitating easy access at various points along the route. Despite the current restricted hours, the stretch has already begun attracting weekend visitors, with several vehicles observed stopping to enjoy views of the Arabian Sea, particularly around the Breach Candy section.

Officials indicate that the remaining work includes the installation of canopies at the public underpasses, which is expected to be completed shortly. Once the promenade is fully operational, the Coastal Road will offer uninterrupted access for both vehicular traffic and pedestrians, enhancing connectivity and providing a much-needed recreational space for residents and visitors alike. The Coastal Road project, initiated in November 2018, has faced several delays due to factors such as the COVID-19 pandemic and changes in design to address concerns from local communities, including the Worli fisherfolk. Despite these challenges, the project has made significant progress, with the road now open for general traffic and the promenade nearing completion.

The total cost of the project is estimated at Rs 13,983.83 crore, encompassing construction and administrative expenses. The development of the promenade and associated green spaces is part of a broader plan to reclaim 70 hectares of land along the coastline, which will be developed into public open spaces featuring parks, amphitheatres, and biodiversity zones. As Mumbai continues to expand and modernize, the Coastal Road project represents a significant step towards creating sustainable, eco-friendly, and equitable urban infrastructure. The upcoming 24×7 access to the Coastal Road and its promenade is expected to provide residents with enhanced mobility options and a high-quality public space that promotes health, well-being, and community engagement.

The anticipated 24×7 operation of Mumbai’s Coastal Road by mid-June 2025 marks a significant achievement in the city’s urban development. It underscores the importance of integrating transportation infrastructure with recreational spaces to create a more sustainable and livable urban environment. As the project nears completion, it holds the promise of transforming Mumbai’s western coastline into a vibrant hub for both mobility and leisure.
