Mumbai Coastal Road Project Adds 70 Hectares of Green Space
The Mumbai Coastal Road Project is taking a significant step towards urban transformation, with 70 hectares of green space being developed as part of its beautification initiative, according to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). The project saw a major milestone on January 26, 2025, when Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis inaugurated the northern connector bridge, linking the Coastal Road to the Worli-Bandra Sea Link. This newly accessible stretch aims to ease traffic congestion and reduce travel time significantly, with motorists now able to use the road from 7 am to midnight daily.
The Coastal Road, named after Dharmveer Swarajyarakshak Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, is 94% complete, with final construction and interchanges set to be operational by February 2025. Spanning 10.58 kilometers from Princess Street Flyover to the Worli-Bandra Sea Link, the project promises to reduce commute times, fuel consumption, and pollution while enhancing Mumbai’s global standing. Since partial operations began in March 2024, over 5 million vehicles have used the Coastal Road, highlighting its role in alleviating traffic bottlenecks. The newly opened northern bridge includes three interchanges to streamline traffic flow at Worli, Prabhadevi, Lower Parel, and Lotus Junction, benefiting thousands of daily commuters.
During the inauguration, CM Fadnavis called the Coastal Road a “jewel of Mumbai,” emphasizing its significance as a catalyst for economic and environmental improvements. Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde echoed this sentiment, noting the project’s world-class infrastructure and its ability to cut travel time between Marine Drive and the Sea Link to just 10-12 minutes. The Rs 14,000 crore project, developed by the BMC, also focuses on sustainability through tree planting, landscaping, and road divider beautification. CM Fadnavis and Shinde personally marked the event by planting trees, underscoring the project’s environmental commitment. With the final interchange set to open next month, Mumbai’s Coastal Road network is poised to redefine urban mobility and livability, promising smoother commutes, greener spaces, and a cleaner cityscape.
