Mumbai Coastal Road Connector Ready by July

Mumbai’s ambitious Coastal Road project is set to reach a significant milestone by the end of July, with one of the crucial connector bridges between the Coastal Road and the Bandra-Worli Sea Link slated to open. Originally scheduled for completion in October, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has expedited the project, mandating the opening of one connector bridge ahead of the planned timeline.

The Coastal Road project, which spans 10.5 kilometres from Marine Lines to Worli, aims to alleviate traffic congestion and provide a seamless travel experience along Mumbai’s western coastline. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has already opened two sections: the southbound route from Worli to Marine Lines on March 11, and the northbound route from Marine Lines to Worli Lotus Jetty on June 10. These sections cover approximately 6.5 kilometres. The third phase, connecting Nariman Point to Worli, is expected to open by July 10.

During an inspection visit to the Coastal Road on Thursday night, CM Shinde reviewed the progress of various infrastructure elements, including inter-passages, marine walkways, and roads along the route from Marine Drive to Worli. He then directed BMC officials to open one of the two planned arch bridge connectors to the Bandra-Worli Sea Link by the end of July. These bow arch string girders, already in place, will facilitate traffic flow in both directions, north to south and south to north.

The first girder was installed on April 26, followed by the second on May 12. The second girder, weighing 2,500 metric tonnes, is notably larger in weight, length, and width compared to the first, which weighs 2,000 metric tonnes. CM Shinde’s directive to increase the span between the two piers from 60 metres to 120 metres aims to avoid any future inconvenience to fishermen.

The construction of the Coastal Road, which began in October 2018, was initially expected to be completed within four years. However, the project has faced delays, extending the timeline by an additional two years. Despite these setbacks, the phased opening of the road signifies progress and commitment to enhancing Mumbai’s infrastructure.

The road and waterproofing works necessary for the connector’s readiness are intricate processes that require time and precision. The opening of the Coastal Road in phases has been a strategic decision to manage traffic flow and ensure that sections of the road can be utilised as soon as they are ready.

Residents and commuters eagerly anticipate the completion of the Coastal Road project, which promises to transform Mumbai’s transportation landscape. By providing a direct link between the Coastal Road and the Bandra-Worli Sea Link, the new connector bridge will significantly reduce travel time and ease congestion, benefiting thousands of daily commuters.

This development underscores the city’s dedication to advancing its infrastructure and improving the quality of life for its residents. As the project approaches its next phase, the early opening of the connector bridge marks a pivotal achievement in Mumbai’s ongoing journey towards creating a world-class transportation network.
