Mumbai’s historic Carnac Bridge, a crucial link between South Mumbai and the eastern suburbs, is on track for completion by June 10, 2025, despite recent setbacks.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has resumed construction after a 15-day delay caused by the late arrival of essential steel girders. The contractor responsible for the delay has been fined ₹1.8 crore for missing the April 30 delivery deadline. The BMC had imposed a penalty of ₹10 lakh per day for delays from May 1 to 2, escalating to ₹20 lakh per day from May 3 to 10. To expedite the process, BMC stationed engineers at the contractor’s Daman plant to oversee fabrication and ensure timely dispatch.
With all 30 steel girders now on-site, installation work has commenced. These girders form the structural base for the main bridge and approach roads. Following their placement, surface leveling and final roadwork will be executed. The BMC aims to complete the reconstruction before the onset of the monsoon, emphasizing the bridge’s importance in easing South Mumbai’s traffic congestion. The new four-lane steel superstructure replaces the original two-lane design, accommodating higher vehicle volumes and restoring a critical east-west link connecting key corridors like P D’Mello Road and the Eastern Freeway. The original Carnac Bridge, built in 1866, was declared unsafe and demolished in 2022.
This reconstruction project underscores the BMC’s commitment to modernizing Mumbai’s infrastructure while preserving its logistical relevance. Officials have stated that any further delays beyond the June 10 deadline would be problematic due to weather-related disruptions. The Carnac Bridge’s timely completion is vital for Mumbai’s transportation network, aiming to alleviate traffic congestion and enhance connectivity between South Mumbai and the eastern suburbs. The BMC’s proactive measures and strict enforcement of penalties highlight the city’s dedication to infrastructure development and public safety
