Ruby Alicare Services Pvt Ltd has been selected as the private partner through a tender process. Work on the ward’s infrastructure has begun as part of the second phase of the hospital’s new building, according to a senior hospital official cited by Mid-Day.
Under the agreement, the private operator will install medical equipment, deploy staff and manage the cardiac services. The ward is expected to reduce the number of cardiac patients referred from KB Bhabha Hospital to civic-run KEM Hospital in Parel, which currently handles such referrals.
The hospital official said the facility would also help patients who need cardiac tests before surgery. Patients, particularly senior citizens and those with existing heart-related conditions, may require tests such as a 2D echocardiogram and an ECG before undergoing an operation. These tests are currently available at private facilities at significantly higher rates, the official said.
A 2D Echo can cost between Rs 1,500 and Rs 2,500 at private facilities, while the service at the new ward is expected to be available for Rs 600, according to the hospital. The official said the facility would therefore serve not only patients requiring cardiac treatment but also those needing preoperative cardiac assessments.
Once operational, KB Bhabha Hospital will be the first civic-run hospital in the stretch between Western Matunga and Santacruz to offer a dedicated cardiac facility, according to the report. The proposed services include angioplasty, coronary stenting, atherectomy, rotablation, valvotomy, septostomy and cardiac catheterisation.
The ward is also expected to provide pacemaker-related procedures, including VVI, VVIR, AAI, AAIR, VDD, VDDR and DDDR pacemaker services. Indicative rates listed for selected services include Rs 80,000 for coronary angiography and Rs 600 for a 2D Echo. The listed rates for implantable cardiac devices range from Rs 2.55 lakh for CRT-P to Rs 6.55 lakh for a CRT-D with a quadripolar lead.
The project’s next stated milestone is the completion of infrastructure work and the start of operations within the two-month timeline indicated by the hospital.
