Mumbai and Pune are experiencing early monsoon conditions, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall across Maharashtra from May 17 to May 20.
The pre-monsoon showers, which began late on Sunday night, have already caused significant disruptions in both cities. According to the IMD, the heavy rainfall is due to the development of pre-monsoon conditions, including cyclonic circulations over Marathwada and the Arabian Sea, and a potential low-pressure system forming off Karnataka on May 22. These systems are expected to bring widespread rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds across Maharashtra, including Mumbai and Pune . In Mumbai, the weather is expected to remain cloudy with intermittent showers, providing temporary relief from the recent heatwave. The IMD has issued a yellow alert for Mumbai and surrounding areas, including Palghar, Thane, and Raigad, from May 21 to May 23, warning residents to prepare for possible rain-related disruptions .

In Mumbai, several areas experienced waterlogging, leading to traffic diversions and delays. For instance, traffic near Sheetal Cinema and Kale Marg in Kurla was diverted, and the Andheri subway was temporarily closed to vehicles due to waterlogging . In Pune, the consistent rainfall has led to waterlogging and a noticeable drop in daytime temperatures. The seasonal rainfall in Pune has reached 60.7mm, 32mm above normal .
