Construction on the Vapi–Surat section of India’s first bullet train corridor is advancing, with the Railways Ministry releasing a video showing tunnel work, bridge construction, track-laying and electrification on the Mumbai–Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail Corridor.
The ministry shared the video in an X post on September 15, showing work underway on the approximately 100-kilometre Vapi–Surat section in Gujarat. The footage includes tunnels being built through hill sections, bridge infrastructure over a river, track-related works and electrification activity for the high-speed railway.
The video also shows a multi-storey bullet train station under construction. The Railways Ministry described the work on the Vapi–Surat section as progressing rapidly. The update provides a visual indication of construction activity on one of the key sections of the 508-kilometre corridor, which will connect Ahmedabad with Mumbai.
The corridor is planned to pass through Gujarat and Maharashtra. According to the report, 348 kilometres of the route falls within Gujarat, while the remaining section extends into Maharashtra. The stations listed for the corridor are Sabarmati, Ahmedabad, Anand, Vadodara, Bharuch, Surat, Bilimora, Vapi, Boisar, Virar, Thane and Mumbai’s Bandra Kurla Complex.
The proposed service is expected to operate at a maximum speed of 320 kilometres per hour. The report states that the average operating speed between Ahmedabad and Mumbai is expected to be about 300 kilometres per hour. The journey, which currently takes approximately six hours by the fastest available trains, is expected to take around two hours once the high-speed rail service begins operations.
The proposed launch timeline remains tentative. The report says India’s first bullet train could begin operations around August 15, 2027, citing indications from the Railways Minister. The ministry’s latest video, however, confirms construction activity rather than a final operational date.
The corridor is being built as a dedicated high-speed rail route, requiring a combination of tunnels, bridges, elevated structures, stations, tracks and electrification systems. The Vapi–Surat works therefore represent more than station construction alone: the section must integrate several large civil and railway systems before passenger operations can begin.
A reduction in travel time between Mumbai and Ahmedabad would create a faster connection between two major economic centres and the urban areas located along the route. The corridor’s planned stops also place cities such as Surat, Vadodara, Thane and Ahmedabad within a single high-speed rail network. The report says the service is expected to support greater movement between the two states and increase business activity along the corridor.
The next major milestone will be the completion and commissioning of the infrastructure, followed by the start of passenger services. The Railways Ministry has not, in the supplied update, announced a final confirmed opening date.
