The Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) plans to add 200 modern, air-conditioned Volvo buses to its fleet to attract passengers who currently prefer private luxury bus services, Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik said. The proposed buses are intended for long-distance travel and will focus on safety, passenger comfort, technology and service quality.
The announcement comes as private air-conditioned bus operators have built a distinct market among passengers willing to pay higher fares for more comfortable journeys. The Loksatta report cited air-conditioned facilities, comfortable seating, shorter travel times and overnight travel services as factors behind the popularity of private luxury buses.
MSRTC’s stated objective is not merely to offer another travel option, but to provide a public bus service that can compete with private operators on comfort, reliability and passenger experience. The planned Volvo buses will be owned by the state transport undertaking, according to the report.
The corporation is expected to study routes in Maharashtra and on inter-state corridors where private luxury bus services have strong demand. The proposed survey will examine passenger numbers, travel demand, existing services, route distance, journey duration and financial viability before routes are selected.
The route assessment will determine where the new Volvo and sleeper buses are deployed. The announcement does not specify the total procurement cost, the number of sleeper buses, the cities to be connected, ticket prices or an operational launch date. These details are expected to become clearer after the route and viability exercise.
The plan also points to the operational challenge facing state-run bus systems as passengers increasingly compare them with private services on comfort and convenience, rather than only on fares. For MSRTC, the proposed fleet expansion will therefore involve not only acquiring buses but also identifying corridors where premium public transport can attract sufficient demand to remain financially viable.
The report also said that passengers would receive a mobile-app booking facility. The next formal milestones are the survey of high-demand routes, the assessment of operational and financial feasibility, and the subsequent finalisation of routes for the new Volvo and sleeper buses.
