Telangana, amidst its monsoon season, has encountered varying degrees of rainfall deficiency across several districts, prompting forecasts of a drier period ahead.
According to the Telangana Development Planning Society (TGDPS), the state has received an average of 229.4 mm of rainfall since the commencement of the monsoon on June 1. However, the forthcoming week portends sparse precipitation, particularly affecting four districts with notable deficits: Mancherial (-84 mm), Mahbubnagar (-78 mm), Peddapalli (-65 mm), and Mulugu (-64 mm). Additionally, an additional 20 districts, encompassing key urban areas like Hyderabad, Rangareddy, and Medchal Malkajgiri, are anticipated to register deficient rainfall patterns. The dry spell, expected to persist over the next four days, is projected to exacerbate these deficits further, although a slight amelioration is forecasted after July 16, as outlined by TGDPS officials.
Since the onset of the monsoon, several districts have reported significant shortfalls compared to expected rainfall levels. Mancherial leads this statistic with only 216 mm of rainfall against an anticipated 278.8 mm. Similarly, Kamareddy recorded 175.3 mm versus 225.5 mm expected, while Medak received 153.5 mm against 192.8 mm. Even Hyderabad, despite recent showers, continues to grapple with uneven rainfall distribution, especially in its northern precincts such as Ameerpet, Tirumalgiri, and Musheerabad. Looking ahead, meteorological experts are optimistic about a more equitable distribution of rainfall across Telangana in the latter half of July through August, bolstered by the prevailing La Niña phenomenon. Private forecasting agencies foresee a promising second phase of the monsoon, potentially leading to above-average annual rainfall for the state.
