Mohali Rape Case: Zero FIR Filed After Minor’s Pregnancy

A Mohali rape case involving a Class VI student came to light after a medical examination at a Chandigarh hospital revealed that the minor was pregnant, prompting Chandigarh Police to register a zero FIR and transfer the investigation to Mohali Police.

Police said the alleged assault was reported by the girl’s family after she developed severe abdominal pain and was taken to hospital. Doctors confirmed the pregnancy during the examination, following which the hospital informed the police, according to the report by the Times of India.

The family’s complaint alleges that the girl, a Chandigarh resident, had become friends with a Class VII student from Mohali and visited the student’s rented accommodation. During one such visit in April, the complaint alleges, the boy and two friends arrived at the house. The accused boy allegedly gave the minor a cold drink mixed with alcohol before sexually assaulting her.

The allegations have not been adjudicated by a court. Police registered the zero FIR on October 7, allowing the complaint to be recorded in Chandigarh even though the alleged offence occurred in Mohali. The case was later transferred to Mohali Police, which is responsible for investigating the alleged offence based on the reported location.

A zero FIR is a police complaint that can be registered at a station outside the territorial jurisdiction of the alleged crime before being transferred to the police unit with jurisdiction. In this case, the procedure enabled Chandigarh Police to record the family’s complaint after the hospital alerted authorities, while Mohali Police took over the investigation.

Investigating officer Kulwinder Singh said police teams were conducting raids to apprehend the accused. Police are also verifying the boy’s age, a step that will determine the applicable legal process in the case. The report did not provide further details about the two other boys named in the family’s account or clarify their legal status.

The case highlights how a serious offence against a child was detected only after a medical emergency led to hospital intervention. The immediate investigation now involves locating the accused, establishing the circumstances described in the complaint, verifying the ages of those involved and determining the appropriate proceedings under applicable law. Mohali Police’s investigation and the age-verification process are the next stated steps in the case.
