MMRDA’s Strategic Triple-Flyover Endeavor to Untangle Ghatkopar Traffic Nears May Completion

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) is steadfast in its mission to alleviate traffic gridlock at Ghatkopar on the Eastern Express Highway (EEH) by targeting the completion of the third Chheda Nagar flyover by May. Part of an expansive highway junction enhancement plan, this initiative forms a pivotal element in MMRDA’s commitment to streamline urban commuting.

Ghatkopar Flyover Traffic

The triple-flyover project, set to culminate with the impending completion of the third Chheda Nagar flyover, is a concerted effort to enhance traffic fluidity and mitigate congestion at the critical Chheda Nagar junction. The existing flyovers, intricately connected between the north-south Chheda Nagar flyover and the Amar Mahal flyover, have already demonstrated significant success in facilitating smoother vehicular movement.

The second flyover, which spans Chheda Nagar Junction and links the Indian Oil Corporation on the Ghatkopar-Mankhurd Link Road (GMLR) to the Thane-bound lanes on EEH, has been a pivotal component in alleviating traffic bottlenecks. As the third flyover takes shape, it is poised to play a crucial role in enhancing south-to-north traffic flow from Amar Mahal towards Vikhroli. Preceding the triple-flyover initiative, Chheda Nagar junction contended with a one-way flyover, directing traffic exclusively from Thane to Sion, lacking a north-bound arm. This configuration contributed to congestion as north-bound vehicles queued at signals to turn right for GMLR, leading to delays for traffic bound for Mulund via EEH. Initiated in July 2018, the triple-flyover project has progressed steadily, with the first and second flyovers already marking completion after five and six years, respectively. With an estimated project cost of Rs 58 crore, MMRDA’s unwavering commitment to enhancing infrastructure and tackling traffic congestion underscores its dedication to enhancing the commuting experience along Mumbai’s Eastern Express Highway. As the May deadline approaches, the third Chheda Nagar flyover stands poised to be a transformative solution, ushering in a new era of seamless travel for the city’s residents and commuters.
