MMRCL Denies Reports on Metro 11 Start

The Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (MMRCL) has officially denied recent media reports suggesting that construction work for the 16-kilometre Metro Line 11, also known as the Green Line, has commenced.

The MMRCL has clarified that the project is still in the preparatory stages, awaiting finalisation and approval of the Detailed Project Report (DPR). In a statement, the Managing Director of MMRCL emphasised that, “We are currently in the process of finalising the DPR for Metro 11. The commencement of construction is contingent upon the DPR being completed and subsequently approved by both the Government of Maharashtra and the Government of India.”

This statement refutes claims that construction has already begun and underscores the regulatory and procedural steps that must be completed before work can start. The DPR, a crucial document outlining the project’s scope, design, and feasibility, must undergo rigorous review and approval processes. The MMRCL also noted that funding arrangements are yet to be finalised, which further delays the start of construction. Responding to queries about the geotechnical soil investigation along the Metro 11 route—spanning from Anik Bus Depot to SPM Chowk through 15 proposed underground stations—the MMRCL confirmed that tenders for this study have been issued.

However, these tenders are intended solely for the preparation of the DPR and are not indicative of the construction phase’s commencement. The geotechnical study is vital for understanding the sub-soil conditions along the proposed route. It will provide essential data needed for designing the underground structures and selecting appropriate construction methods and machinery. The study involves drilling boreholes at regular intervals along the tunnel alignment and at each station site, with depths ranging from 10 to over 20 metres.

The planned stations for Metro Line 11 include the Anik Bus Depot, Wadala Depot, CGS Colony, Ganesh Nagar, BPT Hospital, Sewri Hay Bunder, Coal Bunder (Darukhana), Reay Road, Byculla, Nagpada Junction, Bhendi Bazaar, Crawford Market, CSMT Metro (interchange with Aqua Line), Horniman Circle and SPM Circle.
