MHADA to Digitise 15 Crore Documents and Build 6.5 Lakh Homes in MMR

The Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) is embarking on a significant digital transformation and housing initiative aimed at enhancing transparency and addressing the growing housing demands in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR).

In a move to streamline operations and reduce dependency on traditional information channels, MHADA has announced the digitisation of approximately 15 crore official documents. This initiative is expected to make information more accessible to the public, thereby promoting transparency and efficiency in MHADA’s functioning. The scanned documents are being uploaded and are anticipated to be available on the official website within a week. However, sensitive and classified documents will remain protected. IAS, Vice President and Chief Executive Officer of MHADA, emphasized that this move aims to simplify public interactions and make information easily available to all citizens. To assist citizens without digital access, especially from rural areas, MHADA has appointed dedicated staff and organised public grievance meetings, or Janata Darbars, to address concerns directly.

Addressing the housing shortage in the MMR, MHADA is working towards delivering 6.5 lakh homes in the near future. This ambitious plan includes significant stock focusing on Economically Weaker Section (EWS) to Middle Income Group (MIG) categories, which will soon be available through redevelopment projects at Motilal Nagar, GTB Nagar, Sindhi Society, and PMGP Jogeshwari. The use of 2.5 Floor Space Index (FSI) provisions is helping accelerate these developments. Additionally, MHADA is planning rental housing initiatives targeted at senior citizens, women, and students, along with the construction of 42,000 rehabilitation tenements. These efforts align with the broader goal of providing affordable housing solutions to various segments of the population.

MHADA’s initiatives are part of a broader, strategic push by the Maharashtra Government to combat pollution and enhance green infrastructure. The allocation of Rs 506 crore in the budget to the Environment and Forest Departments aims to strengthen environmental monitoring, implement pollution control projects, and protect biodiversity. A massive greening initiative to plant around 70 lakh saplings across the city will also be undertaken, aimed at increasing Mumbai’s green cover, improving air quality, and promoting urban biodiversity. These efforts reflect a commitment to creating zero-net carbon, eco-friendly, sustainable, gender-neutral, and equitable urban spaces. By embracing clean technologies and nurturing urban forests, the Maharashtra Government aims to shape a healthier, stronger future for every citizen of Mumbai.

As MHADA continues to implement these initiatives, the residents of Mumbai can look forward to a more transparent, accessible, and sustainable urban environment.
