Metro Line 3 Boosts Ridership in Mumbai

Mumbai’s much-anticipated Metro Line 3 is gaining momentum with its newly inaugurated second phase driving a surge in commuter traffic.

On Sunday, the line recorded 32,725 riders by 8:00 PM — a jump of nearly 6,000 commuters compared to the previous day, reflecting growing public confidence in the city’s expanding mass transit infrastructure. The second phase, which connects Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC) to Acharya Atre Chowk in Worli, was opened to the public on Saturday. This extension now offers uninterrupted north-south connectivity from Aarey to Worli, bridging two major economic and residential zones without requiring any transfers — a transformative step for Mumbai’s historically disjointed suburban rail network. The rise in ridership not only highlights the efficiency and convenience of seamless metro connectivity but also underscores the shifting commuter preference towards greener, faster and more equitable urban mobility.

The fully underground Aqua Line, now operational from Aarey to Worli, is designed to absorb daily traffic from congested arterial roads and overburdened rail lines — cutting commute times, slashing emissions, and making city travel more inclusive.
Transit authorities expect numbers to rise further as residents adapt to the new service and word of mouth amplifies its utility. With 32,000-plus commuters on a single Sunday, the early metrics already indicate robust demand, and underscore the Metro’s role as a catalyst for reimagining Mumbai’s public transport system.
The extension is also a vital link in the city’s broader ambition to curb vehicular dependence and promote sustainable mobility. By replacing thousands of short and mid-distance vehicle trips with a clean, electric alternative, Metro Line 3 contributes directly to Mumbai’s carbon neutrality goals.

The new route not only connects residential and commercial hubs but also paves the way for equitable access to workspaces, educational institutions, and public amenities.Urban planners and transit advocates see the line as a key player in reducing transport-related greenhouse gas emissions, improving air quality, and enabling gender-inclusive and safer mobility options for all city dwellers.
As the city grapples with climate challenges and rapid urbanisation, investments in integrated transit corridors like Metro Line 3 represent more than just infrastructure upgrades — they signal a decisive move toward sustainable, people-centric cities. In a metropolis where time, access and air quality remain pressing issues, every kilometre of clean, accessible mass transport counts.
