Central Railway (CR) passengers are still grappling with delays in suburban services three days post a 63-hour mega block, which aimed at upgrading infrastructure at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) and Thane stations. Despite the completion of scheduled works, disruptions persist due to glitches in the newly installed signalling system and minor issues with platform infrastructure.
The introduction of a new signalling system at CSMT has led to delays of up to 20-30 minutes on Wednesday, primarily caused by the engineering team’s challenges in configuring routes towards the terminus. Additionally, reports have surfaced regarding minor cracks on the recently expanded platform at Thane station, contributing to ongoing service disruptions.
CR officials attribute the delays to the transition from traditional relay interlocking to electronic interlocking at CSMT, resulting in temporary operational hiccups. With over 3,700 cables and wires managing 278 train routes, rectifying faults in the system remains an ongoing task for the engineering staff. Commuters, accustomed to daily disruptions, express frustration over the prolonged delays, emphasizing the inconvenience caused during their daily commute. The persistent challenges underscore the complexities involved in upgrading critical railway infrastructure amidst ongoing operations.
While efforts are underway to address signal-related issues, CR officials assure passengers of continued vigilance in resolving faults and ensuring the smooth functioning of the railway network. At Thane station, where platform expansion works were undertaken, minor cracks have been swiftly addressed, highlighting authorities’ commitment to passenger safety and comfort.
The recent mega block, spanning 63 hours from May 31 to June 2, aimed at modernizing railway infrastructure to enhance operational efficiency and passenger experience. However, the lingering disruptions underscore the inherent challenges in executing large-scale upgrades within constrained timelines.
