In a groundbreaking move, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has unveiled a comprehensive plan to enhance road cleanliness across the city. A budget of Rs 5.1 crore has been allocated for the engagement of a Project Management Consultant (PMC), signalling a strategic shift in sanitation efforts.

The decision, ratified during a recent House meeting, involves the deployment of the PMC to formulate a meticulous plan for periodic wall-to-wall cleaning of roads with a width up to 60 feet. This initiative aims to complement the ongoing endeavours of sanitation workers and improve overall urban hygiene. The proposal encompasses administrative approval and expenditure sanction for the PMC to conduct a survey of MCD stretches with a right of way between 30 and 60 feet. Furthermore, the PMC is tasked with preparing a detailed project report and drafting tender documents for selected stretches, facilitating the MCD in executing a precise road cleaning project through concessionaires.
This strategic move follows MCD’s existing responsibility for the regular cleaning of over 1,400km of PWD roads exceeding 60 feet in width, with a projected cost of Rs 1,230 crore over a decade. The newly approved plan aims to adopt a similar modus operandi for roads under 60 feet, entrusting selected agencies with wall-to-wall cleaning, including footpaths, on a weekly basis. The selected agencies will be equipped with mechanical road sweepers and advanced cleaning machinery, along with monitoring tools employing artificial intelligence. This innovative approach acknowledges the limitations of the current decentralised street cleaning methods, especially on smaller roads, and seeks to usher in a more efficient and streamlined process. MCD currently boasts a fleet of 52 Mechanical Road Sweepers (MRS), 38 multi-functioning water sprinklers, and 28 anti-smog guns for road cleaning. However, the expansion of this fleet is imperative to cover the entire road network effectively.
With the proposal now greenlit, the MCD commissioner is authorised to approve the appointment of the PMC, make necessary adjustments based on the project implementation committee’s recommendations, and decide on tendering modalities. This initiative reflects MCD’s commitment to fostering a cleaner environment, improved air quality, and enhanced public health. As the city embarks on this transformative journey, MCD’s proactive approach underscores the importance of a comprehensive strategy for maintaining urban cleanliness and health.
