Mangaluru Hydrogen Plant Opens With 20 MW Capacity, Bigger Expansion Planned

HYDGEN has inaugurated a 20 MW electrolyser manufacturing facility at Ganjimutt in Mangaluru, unveiling 250 kW anion exchange membrane and proton exchange membrane systems for industrial hydrogen production and announcing plans to expand annual capacity to 300 MW by 2029.

The Singapore-based deep-tech startup opened the facility during its Innovation Day 2026. The plant is intended to scale the company’s manufacturing operations and supply electrolyser systems to global markets, according to executive chairman and co-founder Dr Michael Geussens.

“This facility allows us to scale production significantly. Hydgen is not just built for India, it is built for the world to deliver practical, reliable, and cost-efficient hydrogen technology,” Geussens said.

The company’s newly unveiled systems include 250 kW anion exchange membrane, or AEM, and proton exchange membrane, or PEM, electrolysers. These technologies are designed to support hydrogen production for industrial applications. HYDGEN co-founder and chief operating officer Dr Krishna Kumar said the company aimed to provide industries with a reliable hydrogen supply at predictable costs while manufacturing systems suited to the scale of Indian industry.

The facility’s current annual manufacturing capacity is 20 MW. HYDGEN said it plans to raise that figure to 300 MW by 2029 as operations expand. The company also said the growth would create local employment opportunities in the region, although it did not specify the number of jobs expected.

Assistant vice-president of manufacturing Venkatram said 80% of the company’s products were indigenously manufactured. He also highlighted the development of a stack featuring what HYDGEN described as India’s largest active area. The company did not provide further technical specifications for the stack in the information available.

The Mangaluru facility places advanced hydrogen equipment manufacturing within a regional industrial setting rather than limiting the activity to established major industrial centres. The company said its systems would serve industries seeking hydrogen production at the point of use. Mangaluru City North MLA Dr Y Bharath Shetty said on-site hydrogen generation could reduce logistics costs and ensure purity for industrial users.

Dakshina Kannada MP Brijesh Chowta and Shetty attended the inauguration. Chowta linked the company’s growth to his “Back to Ooru” vision, which seeks to encourage regional investment and development. Shetty assured support for HYDGEN’s domestic manufacturing and employment efforts.

The company’s next stated milestone is the expansion of annual manufacturing capacity from 20 MW to 300 MW by 2029. HYDGEN’s plans will determine how quickly the Mangaluru facility moves from its current production scale to the announced target.
