Maheshwaram Medical College Faces Relocation Demand Over Poor Facilities

BRS leader and former minister T Harish Rao has demanded the immediate relocation of the Maheshwaram government medical college to a fully equipped government or rented facility near Vanasthalipuram or LB Nagar TIMS, citing alleged poor infrastructure and unpaid essential-service bills on the campus.

Harish Rao made the demand while participating in a protest with students and former minister Sabita Indra Reddy at the medical college on Wednesday. He called on the Ranga Reddy district collector and the Director of Medical Education to meet the students and provide written assurances on shifting the institution.

According to Harish Rao, the government has failed to clear electricity, water and rent bills for the past 26 months. He also alleged that the campus had garbage accumulation, scrap material and a threat from stray dogs, monkeys and snakes. The allegations were attributed to multiple letters written by the college principal, which Harish Rao said had flagged the conditions but had not resulted in corrective action.

The BRS deputy floor leader described the campus conditions as being worse than those in a cattle shed, while demanding that the college be moved to a location closer to LB Nagar TIMS. The proposed shift, he said, would provide students access to a facility with better equipment and basic services while the government addresses the longer-term infrastructure requirements of the institution.

Students from Telangana as well as Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and Kerala are enrolled at the college, according to the report. Harish Rao said many had selected it because of its proximity to Hyderabad and alleged that they would not have chosen the institution had they known about the conditions they would face.

The dispute also raises questions about the clearances and operational arrangements under which the college has been functioning. Harish Rao alleged that the institution was operating without required fire-safety, no-objection and occupancy clearances, and asked Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy and Health Minister Damodar Rajanarasimha to respond.

During the protest, Harish Rao spoke by phone with Ranga Reddy district collector Narayana Reddy and Director of Medical Education Vani Devi, reiterating his demand for an immediate relocation. The report did not include a detailed response from the two officials or the health department on the allegations, the pending bills or the proposed alternative facility.

Students have previously protested in January and twice afterwards, while representations were submitted to the collector, the college principal and the Director of Medical Education. Their parents also met the health minister, according to Harish Rao. The next step remains the response from the district administration and medical education authorities on the demand for a temporary or permanent shift.
