Maharashtra Reservoir Storage Improves After Fresh Monsoon Rains
Recent monsoon rainfall has strengthened water reserves across Maharashtra, with reservoirs now holding more than half of their live storage capacity. While the improvement offers relief for drinking water supply, irrigation and industrial demand, regional disparities remain pronounced, particularly in the drought-prone Marathwada region, where reservoir levels continue to trail the rest of the state despite recent showers. The latest assessment released by the state’s Water Resources Department shows that Maharashtra’s 3,029 reservoirs collectively hold 53.38 per cent of their live storage capacity. Although the figures indicate a steady recovery following widespread rainfall over recent weeks, storage remains below the 63.42 per cent recorded during the corresponding period last year, highlighting the uneven nature of this year’s monsoon.
The Maharashtra reservoir storage data reflects considerable variation across regions. Konkan has emerged as the best-performing region, with reservoirs filled to 76.54 per cent of capacity, supported by sustained coastal rainfall. Pune follows with 65.27 per cent, while Nashik has reached 55.11 per cent. Reservoirs in Nagpur and Amravati stand at 46.71 per cent and 42.91 per cent, respectively. Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar continues to record the weakest position, with live storage limited to 25.44 per cent. A closer examination of reservoir categories reveals similar trends. Major dams in Konkan and Pune have reached 77.19 per cent and 70.15 per cent live storage, respectively, reflecting relatively healthy monsoon inflows. Medium and minor reservoirs in Konkan also remain well supplied, reinforcing the region’s strong water security outlook for the coming months. By comparison, storage across Marathwada remains significantly lower. Major reservoirs in the Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar division hold only 31.70 per cent of their capacity, while medium reservoirs have reached 17.77 per cent and minor reservoirs 13.86 per cent. The gap illustrates the continuing vulnerability of semi-arid regions that depend on consistent seasonal rainfall to replenish water resources.
Water management experts note that the Maharashtra reservoir storage position remains critical not only for domestic consumption but also for agriculture, hydropower generation and industrial production. Uneven reservoir recovery can influence cropping decisions, groundwater dependence and long-term water allocation, particularly if rainfall weakens during the latter phase of the southwest monsoon. Climate specialists also point out that increasingly erratic rainfall patterns are reshaping water security across the state. Intense downpours over short periods may rapidly fill reservoirs in some catchments while leaving neighbouring basins comparatively dry, underscoring the need for integrated watershed management, improved rainwater harvesting and climate-resilient storage planning.
With several weeks of the monsoon still remaining, water authorities are expected to continue monitoring reservoir inflows and catchment conditions. Additional rainfall could further improve statewide storage, but sustained regional imbalances indicate that long-term water planning must increasingly prioritise equitable distribution, conservation and resilience alongside expanding infrastructure.
