The India Meteorological Department has forecast intermittent rainfall, lightning and gusty winds across parts of the state this week, highlighting growing concerns around climate variability and urban weather resilience ahead of the southwest monsoon. According to regional meteorological assessments, coastal districts in Konkan and adjoining urban belts are expected to experience scattered rain activity accompanied by winds reaching up to 50 kmph in isolated locations. Thane district has also reported increased atmospheric instability linked to pre-monsoon convective activity. Experts note that such sudden thunderstorm formations, combined with rapid urban expansion and shrinking natural drainage systems, can create localised flooding risks even before the formal arrival of the monsoon season.
Pune is likely to witness comparatively stronger storm activity, with lightning and gusty conditions forecast in parts of the district. The city’s rapid construction growth and rising surface temperatures have contributed to increasingly intense heat conditions over recent summers, amplifying the impact of short but concentrated rainfall events. Meteorologists have also pointed to broader ocean-atmospheric developments, including evolving El Niño and Indian Ocean weather interactions, which could influence rainfall distribution and seasonal progression across western India. Although long-term monsoon projections remain under review, experts warn that urban administrations must prepare for greater unpredictability in rainfall timing and intensity.
