The India Meteorological Department has announced that the southwest monsoon has withdrawn from the whole of Maharashtra, marking the end of the rainy season across the state on 8 October. Conditions remain favourable for the monsoon to retreat from more parts of India in the coming days.
The withdrawal was also recorded from Goa, parts of Karnataka, Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh, according to the weather department. The announcement places Maharashtra among the latest regions covered by the monsoon’s ongoing retreat from the country.
The monsoon began its withdrawal from western Rajasthan on 19 September. By 3 October, it had retreated from large parts of the country, including the remaining areas of north India, the whole of Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh, as well as parts of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh and around half of Maharashtra.
The weather department said the withdrawal line had reached Supaul, Ranchi, Sundargarh, Bargarh, Vijayapura, Hyderabad, Belagavi and Panaji. These locations indicate the southwest monsoon’s position as it continues moving south and east from the regions where it was active during the season.
For Maharashtra’s cities and towns, the withdrawal marks a shift from the state’s principal rainy-season period to a drier phase. The change is relevant to local administrations managing water storage, road maintenance and seasonal urban operations, although the supplied weather update does not specify any new municipal advisories or city-level measures.
The monsoon’s departure does not mean that all rainfall ends immediately across the state. The announcement concerns the seasonal withdrawal of the southwest monsoon, while local weather conditions may still vary by location. The weather department said conditions were favourable for the monsoon to withdraw from additional parts of southern India, but it did not provide a final date for its exit from the entire country.
The next stage of the withdrawal is expected to cover further parts of south India as atmospheric conditions remain supportive, according to the weather department. Maharashtra’s state-wide withdrawal was announced on 8 October.
