Traffic through the Malshej Ghat section of National Highway 61 has been suspended indefinitely after a major structural failure damaged part of the highway, prompting authorities to restrict all vehicular movement until safety assessments and repair works are completed. The closure affects one of western Maharashtra’s key transport corridors, disrupting connectivity between the Mumbai Metropolitan Region and northern districts while highlighting the growing vulnerability of mountain infrastructure during increasingly intense monsoon seasons. The damaged section is located near Karanjale village in Junnar taluka, where a recently upgraded concrete stretch of the Ahilyanagar–Kalyan highway developed significant subsidence following persistent rainfall. Engineers reported that nearly 100 metres of the carriageway suffered structural distress after the supporting ground beneath the pavement weakened, raising concerns over the possibility of further collapse if traffic continued.
Transport authorities subsequently diverted all vehicles from the affected corridor, citing public safety as the primary consideration. With the highway remaining inaccessible until further notice, motorists have been advised to use longer diversion routes through Rajgurunagar, Chakan and Lonavala or alternatively via Sangamner, Nashik and Kasara while travelling between Mumbai and Ahilyanagar. Preliminary technical assessments indicate that the road failure may have resulted from a combination of slope instability and prolonged rainfall. Officials observed that excavation activity on adjoining private land is believed to have weakened the foundation supporting a retaining structure along the highway. Continuous rain subsequently accelerated soil erosion beneath the retaining wall, undermining the highway embankment and causing the pavement to subside.
