The move is aimed at reducing outages, improving real-time responsiveness, and strengthening grid reliability in one of India’s most energy-intensive urban regions. The decision follows a high-level review of seasonal power preparedness, where officials assessed the state’s ability to meet rising consumption driven by heatwaves, urban density, and expanding infrastructure. The adoption of AI power systems is expected to shift operations from reactive fault management to predictive monitoring, allowing utilities to anticipate disruptions before they occur.

Energy experts note that cities like Mumbai, with complex and heavily loaded networks, require more than incremental upgrades. AI-led systems can analyse consumption patterns, weather data, and equipment performance simultaneously, enabling utilities to optimise supply while reducing technical losses. This is particularly relevant as climate variability increases the frequency of demand spikes, placing additional pressure on urban grids. Smarter grids can reduce reliance on fossil-fuel-based peaking power by improving efficiency and enabling better integration of renewable energy sources.
