Maharashtra Coastal Road Link Boosts Mumbai Connectivity
The Maharashtra government has cleared a major transport infrastructure project that will establish a direct connection between the under-construction Mumbai Coastal Road network and the Versova-Bandra Sea Link, creating a continuous coastal mobility corridor across western Mumbai. The investment is expected to improve regional connectivity, reduce travel times and strengthen integration between key road infrastructure projects, while also requiring environmental safeguards and community rehabilitation measures. The approved project involves the construction of a 3.55-kilometre connector linking the Bandra end of the Versova-Bandra Sea Link with the Savarkar Sea Bridge. The new corridor has been sanctioned at an estimated cost of ₹1,722.40 crore, with implementation assigned to the state’s road development agency following clearance from the government’s infrastructure decision-making process.
Transport planners view the connector as an important missing link in Mumbai’s evolving coastal road network. Once operational, it is expected to create uninterrupted road connectivity between the city’s western suburbs and South Mumbai, reducing dependence on heavily congested arterial roads. Officials estimate that the corridor will be capable of handling approximately 3,500 passenger car units every hour, helping distribute traffic more efficiently across the metropolitan road network. The Mumbai Coastal Road connector is also expected to generate significant travel time savings for daily commuters. Journeys between Worli and the Fort business district, which frequently extend to around 45 minutes during peak traffic, could be reduced to as little as five to ten minutes under smoother traffic conditions. Likewise, travel between Fort and Versova is projected to become substantially quicker, supporting better accessibility between residential, commercial and business districts. Urban mobility experts note that while strategic road links can improve network efficiency, their long-term success depends on integration with public transport systems and broader mobility planning.
They argue that high-capacity road infrastructure should complement metro rail, suburban rail and bus networks to reduce congestion sustainably while limiting future growth in private vehicle dependence. The project also includes measures aimed at addressing its social and environmental impacts. Around 40 informal residential structures are expected to be rehabilitated, with financial provisions allocated for resettlement. Separate funding has also been earmarked to compensate affected fishing communities and implement environmental mitigation initiatives designed to reduce ecological impacts during construction. The connector will support the larger Versova-Bandra Sea Link project, one of Mumbai’s most significant ongoing transport investments. Construction on the sea link has progressed steadily, with authorities reporting that nearly one-third of the planned work has been completed. The larger corridor remains scheduled for completion in 2028, after which the new connector is expected to enhance its operational effectiveness.
As Mumbai continues investing in large-scale mobility infrastructure, projects such as the Mumbai Coastal Road connector underscore the growing need to balance transport efficiency with environmental stewardship, coastal resilience and inclusive urban planning. The project’s long-term value will depend not only on faster travel but also on how effectively it contributes to an integrated, sustainable and people-centred metropolitan transport system.
