Ahmedabad: In a tense confrontation on Wednesday, BJP leaders faced significant backlash from residents of Madhumalti Society in Kathwada, Ahmedabad, following severe flooding that has devastated the area. The deluge, triggered by intense rainfall on Monday night, caused water levels to surge by up to five feet in Madhumalti Society and surrounding regions. Despite the rain subsiding over 24 hours ago, the floodwaters remain stubbornly high, exacerbating the residents’ distress.
During the visit, MLA from Daskroi constituency, Dilip Bagaria, the chairman of the water and sewerage committee, and other BJP officials were met with furious protests. The delegation’s recommendation for affected residents to relocate to temporary shelters for food assistance was perceived as inadequate and dismissive by the locals. According to an Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) official, residents accused the visiting leaders of prioritising publicity over practical help. “Residents expressed their frustration, claiming that the visit was more about photo opportunities than addressing their immediate needs,” the official reported.
The incident underscores the growing disconnect between local authorities and the residents they serve. As the floodwaters continue to wreak havoc, the community’s frustration reflects broader concerns about the efficacy and empathy of the official response to the crisis. The situation remains dire, with many residents feeling abandoned and unsupported in the face of ongoing adversity. The backlash highlights a critical need for a more effective and empathetic approach to disaster response, demonstrating the gap between official promises and the tangible relief that affected communities urgently require.
