A 32-year-old passenger was detained at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in Hyderabad after security personnel found two live bullets in his baggage during screening on Tuesday night.
The passenger was preparing to board a Fly91 Airlines flight from Hyderabad to Rajahmundry in Andhra Pradesh when the ammunition was detected. The airport is located in Shamshabad, on the outskirts of Hyderabad.
According to Telangana Today, the passenger is a native of Rajahmundry in East Godavari district and had travelled to Hyderabad before booking a return ticket on the flight. During baggage screening, security personnel found two live rounds marked “01”.
The passenger could not produce the required documents for carrying the ammunition, following which airport officials detained him. He was subsequently handed over to the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport police for further investigation.
The discovery places the incident within the airport’s passenger-screening and aviation-security process, where baggage is checked before travellers enter the aircraft boarding chain. The report did not specify how the bullets came to be in the passenger’s baggage or whether he had any other prohibited items.
The police investigation will establish the circumstances behind the possession of the ammunition and examine whether the passenger had the authorisation required to carry it. No further details about possible charges or the outcome of the investigation were available in the report.
The incident was reported as the passenger was due to travel to Rajahmundry. Further action will depend on the investigation by RGIA police into the recovered ammunition and the documents associated with its possession.
