Leopard Sightings Surge as Pernem Hills Suffer

Porvorim: In a session marked by both humour and urgency, Mandrem MGP MLA Jit Arolkar brought attention to the increasing leopard sightings in villages due to the ongoing destruction of hills in the Pernem region. His remarks in the House underscored the gravity of the situation, suggesting that the frequent presence of leopards might lead residents to consider them as unconventional pets.

Arolkar highlighted the critical issue, stating, “Leopards have vacated the jungles and moved into human habitats and cities due to the rampant destruction of hills in Pernem. These wild cats, now searching for food, have begun preying on cats, dogs, and cattle. It is only a matter of time before they pose a direct threat to human beings. The government must monitor this situation closely.” The MLA’s comments, though delivered with a hint of humour, reflected the growing anxiety among locals regarding the rise in leopard encounters. He elaborated, “We might soon stop keeping dogs as pets and instead start keeping leopards. Fatorda MLA Vijai Sardesai might even be the first to have a leopard at his place.”

During the zero hour, Arolkar expressed the fear and anxiety pervading the minds of local residents due to the increasing leopard sightings and encounters. These encounters have resulted in attacks on humans, livestock, and pets, causing widespread concern among the population. “The response of the authorities has been inadequate, and efforts to trap and relocate leopards have been ineffective. We cannot afford to wait until a human life is lost or a leopard is killed in a conflict situation. Immediate steps need to be taken by the government in this regard,” Arolkar asserted. The discussion took a light-hearted turn when Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, in a witty repartee, pointed out, “Yours is the lion,” referring to the MGP party symbol on which Arolkar won his seat. Arolkar responded with equal wit, “The lion has still not come into villages. The government should take action to keep leopards from entering habitation.”

This exchange, while humorous, highlighted the serious underlying issue of human-wildlife conflict resulting from environmental degradation. The destruction of Pernem’s hills has led to habitat loss for leopards, forcing them into closer contact with human populations. The situation calls for urgent intervention and sustainable solutions to prevent further conflicts and ensure the safety of both residents and wildlife. As environmental degradation continues to push wildlife into human habitats, the need for comprehensive conservation strategies and effective wildlife management becomes increasingly critical. The government must address these issues to protect both the environment and the communities that rely on it.
