In a recurring pattern of wildlife intrusion into human settlements, residents of Palkhadi village in Uttan, Bhayander, were startled by the return of a leopard, more than six months after a previous sighting.
The latest encounter occurred in the early hours of April 21, when a villager, Dominic Manish, captured footage of the wild cat on CCTV. The video footage depicts the leopard stealthily approaching a coop, forcibly breaking it open, seizing a chicken, and swiftly retreating from the scene. This incident has reignited concerns among locals, who have reported numerous cases of missing pets and domestic fowl in recent weeks. Notably, this is not the first time the village has encountered such wildlife encounters. On October 4, a fully grown leopard was captured on camera prowling through the village during the early morning hours. Villagers promptly alerted forest officials, providing photographic evidence of the leopard’s presence, which prompted the installation of camera traps in the area.
In response to the latest sighting, concerned villagers have once again reached out to the forest department, urging authorities to implement enhanced measures for wildlife monitoring and management. Specifically, they have requested the installation of camera traps to track the movements of wild animals and ensure the safety of residents and their livestock. The repeated intrusion of leopards into human habitation underscores the urgent need for proactive measures to mitigate human-wildlife conflicts in urban fringe areas.
