Kolkata’s pre-monsoon infrastructure preparedness has moved into sharper focus after state authorities initiated an intensive drainage and canal-cleaning exercise along the heavily congested VIP Road corridor, a stretch that witnesses severe flooding during intense rainfall each year. The intervention is expected to affect daily mobility for thousands of commuters travelling between the airport zone, residential clusters and commercial hubs in the city’s north-eastern edge.

The latest inspection covered the Kaikhali-Haldiram crossing and adjoining low-lying pockets where water accumulation routinely paralyses traffic during monsoon spells. Officials from irrigation, municipal and engineering departments were directed to accelerate desilting work, unclog underground drainage channels and restore stormwater movement before seasonal rainfall intensifies.
