The steel sector remains central to India’s economic ambitions, supplying material for transport corridors, affordable housing, urban infrastructure and industrial expansion. Yet it is also among the country’s most carbon-intensive industries, contributing significantly to industrial emissions. The European Union’s carbon-linked import mechanism, for instance, is expected to affect exporters dependent on conventional production methods. Economists tracking industrial policy believe this could gradually reshape investment decisions across eastern India’s manufacturing corridor.The transition to green steel is also tied closely to urban sustainability. Construction materials used in public transport systems, commercial districts and housing developments account for a major share of embedded carbon in cities. Cleaner steel production could therefore become increasingly important for climate-resilient urban planning, especially in rapidly expanding metropolitan regions like Kolkata.Despite policy momentum, major hurdles remain. Experts point to high technology costs, limited access to green hydrogen, dependence on imported coking coal and inadequate recycling infrastructure as barriers slowing adoption. Smaller manufacturers are particularly vulnerable because cleaner technologies require large upfront investments and stable renewable power access.Government agencies are now exploring incentives, procurement norms and financing support aimed at accelerating low-carbon steel manufacturing. Analysts say the success of these measures will depend on whether policy frameworks can balance industrial growth with environmental accountability and employment generation.
