Kolkata is likely to see some easing in intense rainfall as the depression that fuelled the recent wet spell moves away from Gangetic West Bengal and weakens over neighbouring Jharkhand. The shift offers limited relief to a city where repeated downpours have disrupted commuting and exposed the continuing vulnerability of low-lying roads and drainage networks.
The weather system had moved close to Kolkata earlier in August, bringing widespread rain across southern West Bengal. India Meteorological Department observations showed the depression lying about 20 km south-southeast of Kolkata on August 13 before moving west-northwestwards across Gangetic West Bengal towards Jharkhand.For Kolkata, the immediate significance is not simply whether rainfall stops. Even when the main weather system weakens, saturated ground, accumulated water and clogged drainage points can prolong disruption. Recent heavy spells have already produced waterlogging on several city and suburban routes, affecting office workers, schoolchildren, public transport and road traffic.The rainfall pattern also highlights an important distinction for urban planning. Kolkata does not receive rainfall evenly across its relatively compact municipal area. Earlier this monsoon, meteorological data showed that localised showers could leave the city with a deficit even while surrounding districts received normal or above-normal rainfall. By the end of July, Kolkata had recorded 340.8 mm against a monthly normal of 387.4 mm, despite a wetter June.
That uneven distribution makes city-level flood management more complicated. Drainage capacity, road design, natural water channels and the availability of open land to absorb rainfall all influence how quickly individual neighbourhoods recover after a cloudburst or prolonged spell. Urban planners say resilient drainage cannot depend only on pumping water away; protecting wetlands and other natural retention areas can also reduce pressure on engineered systems.The latest easing therefore provides a window for the city to assess where rainfall repeatedly translates into mobility problems. For residents, even a moderate shower can become disruptive when water accumulates around transport corridors, pedestrian routes and neighbourhood access roads.
The wider lesson is that Kolkata’s monsoon risk is increasingly a question of urban capacity as much as weather intensity. As rainfall patterns become more variable, infrastructure planning will need to account for both extreme events and repeated smaller disruptions. The immediate forecast may bring relief, but the longer-term test remains how quickly the city can drain, recover and keep everyday movement functioning after the next major spell.
