A new cross-border rail freight connection linking Kolkata Port with Biratnagar in eastern Nepal has entered commercial service, creating an additional logistics gateway for bilateral trade and reducing dependence on a single rail entry point. The development is expected to improve cargo movement efficiency, strengthen regional supply chains and enhance economic connectivity across eastern India and Nepal while easing pressure on existing freight infrastructure.
The newly operational Kolkata Nepal freight corridor allows imported goods arriving at Kolkata Port to travel directly by rail to the Nepal Customs Yard in Biratnagar through the Jogbani border crossing. Until now, Nepal’s rail-based third-country imports were largely routed through Birgunj, concentrating cargo movement at a single inland gateway. The expanded access diversifies freight routes and offers industries in eastern Nepal a more direct logistics option.
Officials associated with the project indicate that the inaugural commercial movement carried a full rake of containerised cargo under the revised India-Nepal rail transit framework, which broadened rail access to additional customs locations beyond the traditional corridor. The policy change reflects a wider effort to modernise cross-border freight systems as trade volumes between the neighbouring countries continue to grow.Urban transport and logistics experts say improved rail connectivity can produce benefits extending beyond trade statistics.
