Kolkata Power Network Eyes More Grid Flexibility

Kolkata’s role in West Bengal’s emerging battery-storage economy is gaining traction as a city-based mobility and rail engineering company wins two utility-scale energy storage projects in the state. The developments underline a wider shift in how electricity networks are being planned, with storage becoming increasingly important for balancing renewable power, managing peak demand and improving grid resilience.

The projects, awarded through competitive bidding by West Bengal State Electricity Distribution Company Ltd, together total 100 MW/400 MWh. They are planned at Jeerat and Kharagpur, rather than within Kolkata itself. The contracts are valued at around ₹400 crore and will operate under a 15-year build-own-operate arrangement, according to the company’s disclosure.For Kolkata, the significance lies less in the physical location of the batteries and more in the changing energy infrastructure around the metropolitan economy. The city is a major commercial and industrial centre, where reliable electricity is essential for transport systems, offices, manufacturing, data infrastructure and residential demand. Battery storage can help utilities respond to short periods of high demand without relying solely on additional generation or immediate network expansion.The development also places Kolkata-based engineering capabilities closer to a rapidly expanding part of India’s energy transition. The company operates its corporate office in Taratala and has an established manufacturing presence in West Bengal. Its energy-storage business is being developed alongside its traditional railway and mobility activities.

The latest projects add to a broader pipeline. West Bengal has sought developers for standalone battery systems totalling 500 MW/2,000 MWh across multiple locations, with individual projects starting at 100 MW/400 MWh. Separate transmission-sector tenders have also included 100 MW/400 MWh storage packages at Hooghly and Kharagpur.Kolkata itself is also entering the storage conversation. A separate tender from the city’s electricity distributor has proposed a 40 MW/80 MWh standalone battery energy storage system in Kolkata. That points to a future in which storage is not confined to remote renewable-energy sites but becomes part of urban electricity planning as well.

For citizens, the long-term test will be whether these investments translate into a more stable and flexible electricity network while supporting greater renewable-energy integration. For Kolkata and surrounding urban areas, the next phase will depend on transparent procurement, safe battery deployment, responsible land use and the ability of storage infrastructure to complement  rather than simply add to existing power networks.
