Kolkata Petrol Diesel Prices Remain Steady Today

Retail fuel prices across major Indian cities remained unchanged on Saturday, 8 August, even as global crude markets continued to react to uncertainty around the Strait of Hormuz. The stability offers short-term relief to motorists and businesses, but renewed volatility in international energy markets keeps transport costs and inflation risks in focus.

In Delhi, petrol was priced at ₹102.12 a litre and diesel at ₹95.20. Mumbai recorded ₹111.21 for petrol and ₹97.83 for diesel, while Kolkata stood at ₹113.50 and ₹99.82 respectively. Bengaluru’s rates were ₹110.93 for petrol and ₹98.80 for diesel. Rates can vary across states and locations because of local taxes and other components of the retail price. The immediate stability comes despite a rise in crude prices at the end of the week. Brent crude settled at $83.55 a barrel on Friday, up 1.3%, while West Texas Intermediate ended at about $78.18. Despite the daily increase, Brent recorded a weekly decline, showing how quickly expectations around Middle East supply can shift market sentiment. The main uncertainty is centred on the Strait of Hormuz, a critical route for global energy shipments. Recent discussions involving Iran and Oman have raised expectations that commercial shipping could eventually resume with fewer restrictions. A US official said progress had been made towards an agreement, although implementation remains conditional and uncertainty over shipping conditions persists.

For Indian households, the significance extends beyond the price displayed at a filling station. Petrol and diesel influence commuting costs, freight movement, food distribution and the operating expenses of businesses that depend on road transport. A prolonged oil shock can therefore feed into consumer prices even when retail fuel rates do not immediately move. The present price stability also highlights the importance of energy resilience for Indian cities. Transport-heavy urban economies remain exposed to external fuel shocks, making public transport, efficient freight systems, walkable neighbourhoods and cleaner mobility increasingly relevant to long-term cost and climate planning.IndianOil states that retail fuel prices are subject to daily changes and that prices may differ between outlets within a city or sales area. Consumers therefore need to check the prevailing local rate rather than rely solely on national averages.

For now, motorists have avoided another immediate increase. The larger question is whether calmer conditions in the region can translate into more predictable energy costs, particularly for cities and businesses already managing high transport and operating expenses.
