ST Telemedia Global Data Centres India (STT GDC India) has announced the launch of a state-of-the-art AI-ready data centre campus in New Town, Kolkata.
The ₹450 crore investment marks a pivotal step in enhancing the region’s digital infrastructure, catering to the growing demands of artificial intelligence (AI) and high-performance computing (HPC) applications. Spread across 5.59 acres in Kolkata’s emerging Silicon Valley, the data centre is designed with cutting-edge technology to support next-generation workloads. With an initial IT power capacity of 10 MW—ramping up to 25 MW—the facility is engineered to handle the intensive computational requirements of AI-driven innovations, including large language models and complex data analytics. The first phase will operate with 5 to 6 MW, with future expansions planned to meet escalating demands.
One of the standout features of the data centre is its advanced modular design, allowing for scalable growth without compromising performance. High-density rack capabilities and sophisticated cooling systems, including the provision for liquid cooling technologies, ensure optimal efficiency. The facility’s robust power architecture boasts N+2C redundancy and a radial N+N configuration for power incomers, guaranteeing continuous availability and operational resilience. In alignment with global sustainability standards, the data centre has secured the TIA-942 Rated-3 Design certification, affirming its fault-tolerant infrastructure. Sustainability remains a cornerstone of the design, with initiatives focused on reducing the environmental footprint. The facility aims for a low Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE), integrates water-saving technologies, and employs low-GWP refrigerants, positioning it as an eco-friendly data hub.
The Kolkata campus is not just a technological marvel but also a catalyst for regional economic growth. By providing low-latency connectivity and high computational efficiency, it is poised to accelerate AI-led transformations across various sectors, including finance, healthcare, education, and government services. The facility’s strategic location in New Town enhances its connectivity with key urban nodes, fostering an environment conducive to innovation and enterprise growth. With this new addition, STT GDC India expands its footprint to 30 data centres across 10 cities in India, collectively offering an IT load capacity of 390 MW. The Kolkata data centre is expected to become operational by the second quarter of 2025, reinforcing the city’s emergence as a data-driven hub for enterprises, hyperscalers, and public sector agencies.
Urban infrastructure experts have lauded the project for its alignment with sustainable urban development goals. The focus on energy efficiency, zero carbon emissions, and eco-friendly technologies reflects a broader commitment to creating smart, resilient cities. The facility’s design also embodies principles of gender neutrality and equitable urban growth, contributing to a balanced and inclusive digital ecosystem. Moreover, the data centre is expected to play a critical role in supporting the government’s vision of transforming India into a global technology powerhouse. By fostering an environment that attracts AI startups, tech innovators, and research institutions, Kolkata is poised to become a key player in the country’s digital revolution.
The project also highlights the growing significance of Eastern India in the national digital landscape. As cities like Kolkata continue to evolve into smart cities, investments in advanced data infrastructure are crucial for sustaining economic momentum and driving technological progress. With the digital economy becoming an integral part of India’s growth narrative, STT GDC India’s Kolkata campus stands as a testament to the transformative potential of sustainable, AI-ready data centres. It not only strengthens the city’s IT infrastructure but also underscores a commitment to eco-friendly, resilient urban development.
