Kolkata’s urban transport network is set for another phase of expansion as authorities begin preliminary studies for a proposed metro corridor connecting the city’s northern rail gateway with the eastern technology and residential hub of Salt Lake. The planned alignment is expected to strengthen regional mobility, reduce road congestion, and improve multimodal connectivity across one of eastern India’s most densely populated urban regions.

The proposed metro route would link Kolkata Station in the central-northern section of the city to Karunamoyee in Salt Lake, an area that functions as a key administrative, commercial, and transit node. Transport planners believe the project could ease pressure on overloaded roads and existing public transit corridors that currently struggle to keep pace with growing commuter volumes.The new Kolkata metro corridor emerges at a time when the metropolitan region is witnessing rapid outward expansion driven by real estate growth, office development, and increasing migration towards peripheral urban clusters. Salt Lake and adjoining New Town have evolved into major employment centres, attracting daily commuters from across the wider Kolkata urban agglomeration. However, last-mile connectivity and road bottlenecks continue to limit efficient movement between residential districts and economic zones.Urban mobility experts suggest the project may help integrate fragmented transport systems by creating stronger interchange opportunities between suburban rail, metro lines, buses, and pedestrian networks.
