Kolkata’s expanding metro network is positioning itself as a testing ground for cleaner and technology-driven urban mobility, with the city’s transit authority using a national transport forum to showcase new energy systems, rail safety upgrades and indigenous engineering initiatives that could influence future infrastructure planning across India.

At the recent InnoMetro 2026 exhibition in New Delhi, Metro Railway Kolkata presented a range of projects linked to sustainable transit operations, including battery-backed power systems, advanced train propulsion technology and digital safety mechanisms. The event brought together transport agencies, policymakers and rail technology firms focused on reducing the environmental burden of urban commuting while improving network reliability.The participation comes at a time when Kolkata Metro is undergoing one of its largest phases of expansion, with multiple corridors reshaping how residents move between residential zones, business districts and emerging suburban clusters. Urban planners believe the city’s rail-based transport investments could gradually reduce dependence on private vehicles, easing congestion and lowering transport-related emissions in one of India’s densest metropolitan regions.Among the technologies highlighted was the Battery Energy Storage System introduced on sections of the Blue Line earlier this year. The system is designed to provide emergency operational support during power disruptions, allowing trains to move safely to the nearest station and helping maintain underground ventilation systems. Transport analysts say such infrastructure is becoming increasingly important for climate-resilient transit operations, particularly in cities vulnerable to heat stress, flooding and ageing power networks.

Officials also outlined ongoing work on Linear Induction Motor-based propulsion systems through a research collaboration with a leading technical institution. Industry experts view indigenous propulsion technology as a strategic shift that could reduce long-term dependence on imported systems while supporting domestic manufacturing capabilities in the urban rail sector.The broader significance of the Kolkata Metro showcase lies in how older public transport systems are adapting to new urban pressures. India’s first metro network has historically struggled with ageing infrastructure, operational bottlenecks and delayed expansion projects. However, recent investments indicate a gradual transition towards integrated and energy-efficient transit planning that aligns with national goals around low-carbon urban growth.Urban mobility specialists note that infrastructure exhibitions increasingly function as policy laboratories where cities exchange ideas on automation, passenger safety, renewable energy integration and AI-assisted transit management.
