A long-delayed section of Kolkata’s Orange Line Metro corridor has finally moved closer to completion after engineers connected a crucial viaduct segment at Chingrighata, a bottleneck that had slowed expansion of the city’s airport-bound rapid transit network for years. The breakthrough is expected to accelerate work on the New Garia–Airport route, a project widely viewed as essential for easing pressure on Kolkata’s congested eastern transport spine.
The missing stretch, located along the busy EM Bypass corridor near Salt Lake, had emerged as one of the most difficult engineering and administrative hurdles in the Kolkata Metro expansion programme. Authorities completed the final girder-launching exercise during a series of overnight traffic diversions across two weekends, reconnecting a critical viaduct link that officials say is central to operationalising the remaining portions of the Orange Line.Urban mobility experts say the Orange Line carries importance beyond conventional metro expansion. Once fully operational, the corridor is expected to improve connectivity between southern Kolkata, Salt Lake’s technology and commercial districts, and the airport region, reducing dependence on road-based transport across one of eastern India’s most traffic-stressed urban zones.The project has also highlighted how coordination failures between multiple agencies can significantly delay public infrastructure delivery in dense metropolitan regions. Over the past two years, the Chingrighata section remained stalled amid disputes linked to traffic diversion approvals and construction access near one of the city’s busiest intersections. Court interventions and repeated reviews eventually paved the way for the latest construction push.
Railway officials indicated that the completed viaduct connection now enables work to progress toward linking Sector V and other unfinished stretches of the Orange Line. Construction agencies have simultaneously expanded temporary road infrastructure and diversion routes to maintain traffic movement during ongoing deck installation activities.For residents commuting between Kolkata’s southern suburbs and the eastern business districts, the Orange Line is expected to significantly cut travel time while offering a lower-emission alternative to private vehicles and diesel-operated buses. Urban planners note that transit-oriented infrastructure projects of this scale can also reshape real estate patterns, encourage denser mixed-use development around stations, and reduce long-term environmental stress caused by uncontrolled road expansion.However, experts caution that the city’s broader metro network still faces unresolved execution challenges, including land coordination, utility relocation, and integration gaps between existing and under-construction corridors. Several other metro projects in Kolkata continue to experience delays linked to civic clearances and complex underground utility systems.
Even so, the progress at Chingrighata is being seen as a significant turning point for the Orange Line project. With eastern Kolkata continuing to witness rapid residential and commercial growth, transport planners argue that timely completion of mass transit infrastructure will remain critical for building a more connected, low-carbon and commuter-friendly urban region over the coming decade.
