Kolkata Metro Nears Airport Connectivity Launch

Kolkata is poised to enhance its urban mobility with the anticipated launch of the Noapara-Airport Metro line by July 2025.

This development aims to provide seamless connectivity between the city and Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport, significantly reducing travel time and easing congestion on existing roadways. The first phase of this project encompasses a 7-kilometre stretch, connecting Noapara to the newly constructed Jai Hind Metro Station at the airport. This segment includes key stations such as Dum Dum Cantonment and Jessore Road, facilitating efficient transit for commuters from various parts of the city. The line is part of the larger Yellow Line (Line 4) project, which, upon completion, will extend to Barasat, further integrating Kolkata’s northern suburbs into the metro network.

Jai Hind Metro Station, situated approximately 13 meters below ground level, is designed to be one of Asia’s largest underground metro facilities. Spanning over 14,645 square meters, the station features five platforms, including provisions for emergency services and future route expansions. Amenities such as escalators, lifts, and subways with travelators are incorporated to ensure accessibility and convenience for all passengers. The construction of this metro link has faced several challenges, including stringent height restrictions near the airport and the need to relocate underground utilities. Despite these obstacles, the project has progressed steadily, with trial runs completed and final safety inspections by the Commissioner of Railway Safety scheduled. Officials express confidence in meeting the projected launch timeline, marking a significant milestone in Kolkata’s transportation infrastructure.

Beyond improving airport access, the Noapara-Airport Metro line is expected to contribute to environmental sustainability by encouraging public transport usage over private vehicles, thereby reducing carbon emissions. Additionally, the project aligns with broader goals of creating equitable and inclusive urban spaces, offering reliable and affordable transit options for all residents. As Kolkata continues to evolve, the integration of advanced metro services like the Noapara-Airport line underscores the city’s commitment to developing a modern, efficient, and sustainable transportation network. The forthcoming launch is anticipated to set a precedent for future infrastructure projects aimed at enhancing urban connectivity and quality of life.
