Kolkata Metro Extended Service Hours Boost Daily Mobility

Thousands of commuters in Kolkata are set to gain from longer operating hours on the city’s busiest metro corridors, with services on the Blue and Green lines scheduled to begin earlier in the morning and continue later into the night from July 27. The revised Kolkata Metro service hours are expected to improve access for office workers, students and shift-based employees while reinforcing public transport as a more dependable alternative to private vehicles.

Under the revised schedule, trains on the Blue Line and Green Line will start operations at 6 am from Monday to Saturday, replacing the existing morning timetable. The last services on both corridors will depart at 10.30 pm, extending travel availability well beyond previous operating hours. Authorities have also planned additional daily train services to accommodate the expanded timetable and anticipated passenger demand. The decision reflects growing pressure on Kolkata’s rapid transit network as employment patterns evolve and more commuters seek reliable transport outside conventional office hours. Urban mobility specialists have consistently argued that limited operating windows often discourage public transport use among workers in healthcare, hospitality, manufacturing and the technology sector, where shifts frequently begin before sunrise or finish late in the evening.

Longer Kolkata Metro service hours could also strengthen multimodal connectivity across the metropolitan region. Earlier departures may improve integration with suburban rail services and long-distance trains, while later operations are expected to reduce dependence on road-based transport after business hours. This could contribute to lower traffic congestion and reduced transport emissions, particularly along heavily travelled north-south and east-west corridors.Transport planners note that extending operating hours, however, is only one aspect of building a resilient urban transit system. Sustaining higher service levels will require careful scheduling of maintenance activities, efficient deployment of staff and continued investment in signalling and operational infrastructure. As passenger volumes continue to rise, maintaining punctuality and safety will remain essential to ensuring commuter confidence. The revised timetable is also likely to support the city’s evening economy by offering improved mobility for workers and visitors attending cultural events, commercial districts and educational institutions. Better access to dependable public transport can enhance economic productivity while encouraging a gradual shift away from private vehicle dependence, aligning with broader urban sustainability objectives.

Looking ahead, transport experts believe the operational changes may serve as a benchmark for future service enhancements across other metro corridors as Kolkata’s rail network continues to expand. The effectiveness of the revised schedule will ultimately depend on passenger uptake, operational reliability and the system’s ability to balance increased demand with long-term infrastructure maintenance.
