Kolkata’s recent spell of rain has done more than pull temperatures sharply lower; it has exposed the pressure that intense, short-duration rainfall can place on the city’s ageing infrastructure. With drainage networks, roads and pumping systems already facing recurring monsoon stress, the episode adds urgency to Kolkata’s wider effort to build infrastructure capable of handling a more volatile climate.
The city recorded a maximum temperature of 23.2°C after two days of rainfall, around 11°C below normal, while the minimum fell to 19.2°C. The weather department forecast further rain and thunderstorms across parts of West Bengal.For Kolkata, however, the infrastructure question is more significant than the unusual temperature shift. The city’s drainage system has evolved around a landscape of canals, underground sewers, pumping stations and natural wetlands. A recent climate assessment notes that parts of the drainage network were designed for rainfall intensities that no longer adequately reflect episodes of concentrated heavy rain.That mismatch becomes visible when intense showers overwhelm local drainage capacity. Recent rainfall has already produced waterlogging across several neighbourhoods, while damaged roads and potholes have added another layer of risk for commuters. For pedestrians, public transport users, emergency vehicles and local businesses, even temporary flooding can translate into longer journeys, disrupted services and higher operating costs.
Kolkata Infrastructure upgrades are underway in several vulnerable areas. The civic body’s 2026–27 budget includes new and expanded stormwater drainage works across multiple wards, alongside modular rainwater-harvesting projects. A drainage pumping station project in north Kolkata is also intended to increase the system’s ability to move stormwater away from chronically waterlogged neighbourhoods.Yet engineering capacity alone cannot solve the problem. Kolkata’s wetlands and canal network are part of the city’s flood-management system, while rapid urbanisation and expanding paved surfaces can reduce the land available for water absorption. The East Kolkata Wetlands, in particular, provide an important natural service by treating wastewater and supporting the city’s wider drainage ecology.
The immediate priority is therefore not simply faster pumping after a downpour. Kolkata needs drainage expansion, canal restoration, permeable public spaces, reliable maintenance and protection of natural water-retention areas to work as one system. For citizens, the measure of resilient infrastructure is ultimately simple: roads that remain usable, neighbourhoods that drain quickly and essential services that continue functioning when rainfall becomes less predictable.
