Kolkata’s power system is set to gain greater flexibility as West Bengal moves ahead with large-scale battery storage procurement, including an 800 MWh facility awarded under the state’s wider storage programme. The development matters beyond the project sites: for Kolkata, where electricity demand is concentrated, more flexible grid capacity could help manage evening peaks and integrate more renewable power without relying solely on conventional generation.
The state’s distribution utility has awarded 200 MW/800 MWh of standalone Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) capacity to NTPC Green Energy following an electronic reverse auction held on August 7. The discovered storage tariff is ₹4.35 lakh per MW per month. The award forms part of a larger 500 MW/2,000 MWh procurement programme.The projects are spread across four substations rather than being located in Kolkata itself. The largest, 200 MW/800 MWh installation is planned at DPL in Paschim Bardhaman, while Kharagpur, Hooghly-Arambag and Jeerat account for 100 MW/400 MWh each. This geographic distribution is important because electricity reliability in a major metropolitan area depends not only on local infrastructure but also on the wider transmission and distribution network feeding it.For Kolkata, the significance of the programme lies in what battery storage can do for the grid.
A BESS can absorb electricity when demand is lower and release it during high-demand periods. Unlike a conventional power plant, it can respond rapidly, making it useful for balancing variable renewable generation and reducing pressure on the network during short periods of intense demand.The procurement also signals a shift in how West Bengal is planning power infrastructure. The original tender required storage systems capable of at least four hours of discharge, one cycle a day and 95% monthly availability. Projects are to be developed under a build-own-operate model, with commissioning required within 18 months of the relevant agreement.That could become increasingly relevant as Kolkata’s electricity needs grow alongside commercial activity, housing, transport infrastructure and digital services. Greater storage capacity can potentially reduce the need to match every demand increase with new conventional generation, while creating more room for solar and other variable renewable sources.
Still, storage alone will not determine Kolkata’s power resilience. Transmission capacity, distribution upgrades, battery safety, land-use planning, recycling and end-of-life management will be equally important. For the city, the real test will be whether investments outside its boundaries translate into a more reliable, flexible and lower-carbon electricity network for citizens and businesses.
